August was an exciting month for us a Splash Effect. At the top of the month we had our Splash Retreat, which kicked off a ton of inspiring brainstorm sessions in the following weeks on our #splash_marketing channel. We also moved into a new office, so we used Slack to communicate about moving plans and to share inspiration for how to make the most of our new space. Instagram Stories was a hot topic, as were the Olympics. As per usual, the /giphy command proved to be quite the source of entertainment. Without further ado, here are some the best moments from our Slack this month.
We, like the rest of the world, were loving the Olympics in August. We first got excited by how much we identified with the @Olympics community manager due to their Tweeting style.
In important Olympic news we enjoyed some Olympic kittens…
Some of us got overly excited about Canada winning things…
We also enjoyed some innovative marketing tactics and reporting styles…
And we were also quite entertained by some excellent memes produced by the internet…
In case you missed it, our marketing co-ordinator Kristen wrote a blog post about some of the highlights of the Olympics on social media. Check it out here!
2) New Digs
In August we moved into a new office. Kareem marked the occasion with some Dj Khaled…
We expressed our gratitude for our new office’s kitchen facilities…
We discovered that the office upstairs has dogs. #beourfriends?
We realized we have so many boardrooms that they need their own names…
We got used to some quirks…
And we used Slack to have a conversation that was way too long about what area of Toronto we’re now based in. (We moved like three blocks down the street.)
3) A simple request took a turn.
We still don’t really know why Mady was in a plane above Toronto. Also, no one came to rescue me with a charger either. We were all clearly too distracted by the plane thing.
4) Team Retreat Lunches
The team retreat was the rare time when we were all in the same room together two days in a row. During those two days we used Slack for one thing and one thing only: to place our Subway orders.
Just in case you ever have to get one of us lunch. 😉
5) Instagram Stories
When Instagram Stories launched we immediately jumped on Slack to share our first thoughts about the announcement.
Since then most of us have come around to the benefits of the platform, but still acknowledge that it’s a direct rip off of Snapchat.
For a more in depth look at Instagram Stories, our initial reactions and since changed opinions, check out our Content Marketing Manger Samantha’s latest blog post!
6) KR Dropped his Mixtape
In the early hours of the morning on August 12th, Uzo #Blessed us with these brilliant mock-ups of our co-founder’s first mixtape & tracklist, inspired from some shots taken at our team retreat at Evergreen Brick Works.
Needless to say, we were very entertained.
7) We chose new brand colours.
At the team retreat we decided that the Splash Effect brand should truly embrace its nautical theme, so we knew that had to be reflected in our branding. After the retreat we used Slack to decide upon the perfect colour palette. We’ll officially be rolling this out in the coming months but here’s a sneak peak so you can see our process!
Also at the team retreat we decided we wanted to have a version of Monty (the whale that appears abstractly in our logo) in characterized form for use in certain publications and on our new website. Mady shared this little guy with us shortly after we chose our palette.
CUTE, RIGHT? Just wait…
7) You guessed it, /giphy.
The /giphy command continued to prove interesting/hilarious.
We think Uzo’s on to something there.
